From Engineer to CTO
A journey in progress.
Hi, I'm Alexander. I started as a software engineer, spent 18 years refining my craft across different companies and roles, and eventually stepped into the world of leadership. Today, I'm a CTO — but not just a title. I'm still learning, adapting, and figuring out what it really means to lead, scale teams, and drive businesses forward in a constantly evolving tech landscape.
How To CTO is my space to share that journey. It's not a blueprint — it's a real, evolving experience of balancing technical depth with leadership, vision with execution, and strategy with the day-to-day realities of running an engineering organization.
Why This Platform?
I spent nearly two decades as an individual contributor (IC), where writing clean code and solving hard problems was my world. Then I transitioned into leadership — first as an engineering manager, then director, and now a CTO, responsible not just for systems, but for people, culture, and business outcomes.
And here's the thing: there's no handbook for this. No perfect guide to becoming a great CTO. The role is different for everyone, shaped by company needs, team dynamics, and personal strengths. I've faced challenges — some expected, some surprising. I've made decisions that worked and others that didn't. And in the process, I've learned that leadership is just as much about growth as it is about experience.
So this platform exists to:
- Demystify the CTO role — What does it actually take? What does the job look like beyond the buzzwords?
- Bridge the gap between ICs and leadership — If you're a senior engineer or tech lead considering the transition, this platform will give you an inside look at what's ahead.
- Explore the intersection of tech, business, and people — Because being a CTO isn't just about tech — it's about aligning engineering with business goals, fostering a great team, and making tough calls.
- Reflect on my own journey — Writing forces clarity, and this is my way of consolidating insights, mistakes, and lessons learned.
And it's not just the view from my chair. Through CTO Spotlight, I dig into how other leaders actually work — their routines, the calls they made, the lessons they earned. Use what fits, ignore the rest. My own running log lives in the field notes.
Who Is This For?
If you're an engineer thinking about leadership, a tech lead wondering what's next, or a CTO looking for relatable experiences, this platform is for you. Whether you're managing your first team or scaling a global engineering org, I hope my experiences spark useful insights and conversations.
Beyond the Platform
This isn't just a side project — it's part of a bigger journey. I'm exploring business opportunities, experimenting with SaaS ideas, and working towards a life that blends impact, flexibility, and adventure.
Let's learn, adapt, and CTO better — together.
